Katrina Mission Team Update

The Katrina Mission Team departs for Slidell, Louisiana on February 17 and returns home on February 25. Our expectations have already been exceeded, with twenty team members committed to this recovery and re-building effort. Thank you to all who have supported the creation of our team, either by financial contributions, joining us at our December public supper, or by prayer for the success of our mission.

Dale Kimball is the Operations Coordinator of the Slidell Northshore Recovery Center. Volunteers are a critical part of the recovery effort. They offer much more than removing debris and replacing roofs. They also bring encouragement to the homeowners. “The relationships between our homeowners and volunteers are built forever,” explains Dale. “In fact, we have many ‘repeat teams’ who come more than once because of the positive experiences they have here.” Our vision is for St. John’s to become one of those “repeat teams” UMC congregations.

On Sunday, February 11 Pastor Mark (also a team member!) will lead the congregation in a sending forth, or mantling service. Mission work is not a task for individuals. The Lord sent his disciples into the world in small groups. On this day the congregation promises to support the volunteers through prayers for the success of their mission and for their safe return. The congregation also pledges to continue their support when the volunteers return from Slidell.
