Men’s Book & Video Group
The Men’s Book & Video Group in February viewed H. G. Wells’ 1960 “Time Machine”, the first of two gatherings where we partially escaped from today’s world. On March 12 we met to discuss Michael Crichton’s “Timeline”, a tale about using quantum mechanics to send people back to the Hundred Years’ War in southwestern France. George Lamb helped us expand our understanding and knowledge of the science and history involved. As usual, George had wonderful maps and photographs to help illustrate our discussion of this, and other universes.
In attendance at our March gathering were Lenny Colongione, Earle Custer, Don Fillebrown, George Lamb, George Lavoie, Bruce McAdam, Patrick Murphy, and Chuck Strate. We invite you to speak with any of us to learn more about our group. All selections are available at your local library, or for sale in paperback at Barnes & Noble.
Our next three selections bring us back to our own times, and delve into the human mind and soul. In April we read Joan Dideon’s “The Year of Magical Thinking”, about the author losing her daughter and husband in one year. She speaks directly to anyone who has ever loved a husband, wife, or child. Her mourning is what no one could imagine. In May we read Immaculee Ilibagiza’s “Left to Tell”, with the survivor describing evil that is the soul-numbing devastation in Rwanda. The author’s unquenchable faith and connection to God brings her along a remarkable path to forgiveness. In June we read Stanley Milgram’s “Obedience to Authority”, about the shocking and elusive conditions under which men obey authority regardless of the morality involved.
All St. John’s men, including visitors, are invited to join us for a discussion of “The Year of Magical Thinking” on Monday, April 9 @ 7 PM. For directions to George Lamb’s Durham home call George at 868-5599.
