News & Notes 8/30/07

Dear St. John’s Church Family,

I’m quite a bit later than normal in getting this week’s issue of “News & Notes” out to you.  It may be briefer than normal because of that - the hour is getting late.

Here’s a last minute reminder of the funeral tomorrow for our brother in Christ, Russ Newell.  It’ll be at the church, at 10 AM - committal service at Pinehill to follow - reception at Hartford Hall.  If you could bake something for the reception, I’m sure Claramae and her crew would be very appreciative!

Labor Day weekend - a time for us to be thankful for the work that God empowers us to do - our labors are a ministry wherever God plants us.  I understand it’s also a time when organized labor is recognized.  For all the positive things that organized labor has done for our citizens we can be thankful.  One of the historical markers in downtown Dover speaks of the work of a woman (whose name I’m not able to remember) who attempted to organize the women of one of the mills - due to the deplorable working conditions.  If I remember correctly, she was unsuccessful.  For all of us who work in fair and just environments, we give thanks.  And we offer prayers for those who don’t.

We will celebrate Communion at both services this Sunday morning - a wonderful opportunity to experience God’s grace!!  Let me also remind you that it’s on Communion Sunday’s that we receive a special offering for the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund.  You are always very generous!  On behalf of the folks who benefit from this fund - both within and beyond our church family - thank you!!

The magic number is down to three - for teachers that is.  Natalie Hanson and the Education Committee would love to find three more folks who could help team teach.  One person is needed for grade 1, one for grade 2 and one for grade 3!  If you can share in this vital ministry of St. John’s Church, please give Natalie a call.

All the teachers and subs are encouraged to be in worship at the first service on September 9th - when there will be a Dedication of the Teachers, at the same time  that we Bless the Children.  Then, after Coffee Fellowship, there will be a teacher/sub meeting with Natalie - go go over all the details, to pick up your curriculum and to set your rooms up.

Judith Custer and Sandy Dearborn will both be off next week.  The office will be covered at various times.  If you need something and no one is here, please leave a message on the answering system.  No one will be around on Monday, at all!!  Claramae Hebert will cover the office on Tuesday morning - and Wanda Winnicki will cover on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  (Thanks, ladies!)

Bob Willome is recruiting help in moving Deb Calabro from Somersworth to Dover, on Saturday, September 8th, at 2 PM.  If you can help, please give Bob a call.  It would be wonderful if we could get six or eight trucks (with their drivers, of course) to help with the move.  There’s that old adage: many hands makes Bob sweat less!!

I’m thinking that this is all the news that I have to share right now.  So I’ll close and call it a night.  I’ll see a number of you at Russ’ funeral - and all of you in church on Sunday!  Peace, Mark
