Spanning three generations from the end of the Civil War through Prohibition, this story begins with an interracial marriage between a wounded and dying Vermont soldier and a runaway slave girl who finds and saves him. The newlyweds make a go of country life, wining the locals’ begrudging respect. Twenty-five years later, Leah finds that she cannot continue to put the past behind her and must return to her North Carolina roots.
The men plan to meet regularly on the second Monday of each month. All St. John’s men, both members and visitors, are invited to join us for our lively monthly discussions of selected books and videos.
