April 16, 2009 St. John’s Church News & Notes
Dear Friends and Family,
What a wonderful Holy Week and Easter we shared together this year. May our resurrection faith continually shape us and give us hope for life and ministry together. I need to thank many folks who helped to create our worship experiences, but if I try to list them, I’m sure I’ll leave someone out. I hope that’s not a cop-out, but (if you’re one of those support folks) please know that every deed - great or small - was appreciated!
“Thanks to all who donated the beautiful plants for Easter. A nice crew of people came to deliver flowers on Monday morning - which I was thankful for. There were plants given to all of our shut-ins and many in our extended community that are in need in some way. If you know of some one that you would like to make sure has a plant, there are some still on the altar in the church. Please feel free to come and take one or two for people that you personally know that would be blessed by this gift. Don’t worry too much about the arrangement, I will make sure that it looks good before Sunday AM. If you’re not sure if some one in the church got a plant, e-mail me at cherinixon[at]yahoo[dot]com. Thanks, Cheri Nixon”
“On Saturday April 18th, I am walking 5 miles as part of the Walk MS campaign to find a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. I am walking for my sister (Kaera Sawler) who was diagnosed with MS last year. She struggles with the disease each day but has managed to make her family’s life as normal as possible. At this time there is no cure for MS. The only treatments available have debilitating side-effects. They are very close to finding a pill form of medication to help with MS and hopefully even closer to a cure. I am walking in hopes that the money I raise will help find a cure so that no one else has to live with this disease. Please consider helping, by walking with me or making a donation. Whatever you can give will help! I greatly appreciate your support. Sincerely, Abby” (Ann & Martin Kippley’s daughter) Note: you can pledge/give to support Abby directly at this site:

“I wanted to let you (i.e. the Interfaith Community) know that we are holding our annual Holocaust Remembrance Sabbath service this Friday night, April 17th, at 7:30 pm, at Temple Israel on Sixth Street in Dover. I only got around to sending a notice to the paper on Monday - but I wanted to be sure you knew if any of you or any members of your faith communities might be interested in attending. Rabbi Larry Karol”
Don’t forget that we’re having a terrific “Second Sunday Concert” this Sunday afternoon, at 3:30 PM, with Tony Deblois playing the piano. It should be a wonderful event, and I commend it to everyone. You might want to invite some family and friends, too. There’s no admission charge, but a freewill offering will be received.
Our next Public Supper is just a little over a week away. It’ll be Pork Roast with all the fixin’s. The sign-up sheets will be at the church this Sunday - and since we have only one Sunday before the supper, I hope everyone will “beat feet” for the rolling bulletin board to sign-up.
The Outreach Committee has taken on the task of putting on our Spring Rummage Sale - Friday, May 1, from 5 till 8 PM; and Saturday, May 2, from 8 AM till Noon. They need LOTS of clothing to sell (and it’s just clothing that will be sold at this rummage sale - no white elephant, please); lots of help setting things up - Wednesday and Thursday evenings as well as any time during the day on Thursday or Friday that you have time to stop in. Please clean out your closets and bring your contributions any time after noon on Sunday, April 26th. We can’t accept donation before then because we just don’t have the room to store things.
Our Spring Clean-Up Day has been scheduled for May 9th, from 8 AM till Noon. You’ll see the full list of jobs to be done in the May Bell-Wether, but won’t you consider writing this event on your calendar and coming for whatever part of the morning that you can give? There seems to be a “regular” crowd of folks who turn out for these work days, but it would be wonderful to have some new faces - or old faces that haven’t helped in awhile - or . . . . Coffee and goodies will available from the beginning of the morning.
I’m repeating an article that I included in last week’s issue of “News ‘n Notes,” because I’m not aware of any responses to it:
In one of the unfortunate circumstances of today’s economy, one of our own - Cathryn Norris - must move from her home, here in Dover. She is looking for some help with a couple of details relative to her move. If you can help with any of these, please be in touch with the church office. Here’s the list: 1.) temporary boarding for 2 miniature, neutered goats; 2.) storage for outdoor stuff (gardening, lawn mower, etc.); 3.) storage for upholstered and finished furniture; 4.) adoptive home for 3 adorable button quail (little), includes cage; 5.) housing - need move-in date by/before May 30 for Cathryn and her daughter, Amelia, and two (ideal tenant) dogs - rent no more than $600. She also has a number of pieces of antique furniture for sale. How can we all help?
A police recruit was asked during the exam, ‘What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?’ He answered, ‘Call for backup.’
That’s it for this week. Enjoy this wonderful weather. See you in church on Sunday! Grace & peace, Mark
