Katrina Mission 2010 – April 17–25
Following the special October 11 worship service, our member list grew to thirteen volunteers split about evenly between adults and teenagers. This is school vacation week for many area districts. Several are first time volunteers, joining our commitment to help St. Bernard Parish families rebuild their homes and lives.
The Team travels by car or van, staying overnight at a Roanoke, VA church each way and at Reaching Out In Love Volunteer Center in Violet, LA. All meals and refreshments are included, except while in transit.
Our new construction manager is The St. Bernard Project (www.stbernardproject.org), 2009 national winner of CNN’s “Hero of the Year” award. Their schedule has us working full days Monday through Thursday, then closing all work sites for the Friday holiday. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Fest kicks off on Friday. We hope to provide the Team an opportunity to experience some of the heritage that makes the region unique. Our hosts appreciate our supporting their efforts to keep their heritage and traditions alive. It is not all about the work, but also about the people who are grateful that we return each year.
Volunteers should be physically able to work at the site, and willing to learn new skills while serving others. Members will work together at the Katrina Mission Team supper on Saturday, December 5. Our limited meeting and Home Depot training classes schedule begins in 2010, with dates tba.
This year’s all inclusive fee is estimated at about $350. Financial aid is available for up to 50% of the fee. However, no one should be discouraged from applying for assistance if called to serve God’s people by joining our Team.
