News & Notes 12/29/2011

Greetings to you, My Friends,

There’s not allot happening around the church this week, so there isn’t much news to share.  Let me begin with something from Cheri N - who was the “chief arranger” of Advent/Christmas decorations in the sanctuary:

THANK YOU all for your contribution of the Poinsettia’s for Christmas. They were beautiful!  Thank you too to the people that came on Monday AM and willingly delivered plants to over 70 people in our community. Right now there are about 4 plants that were designated by people wanting to take their own plants home after the season. They are waiting for you in Hartford Hall.  Thanks again, Cheri

And I say thanks, too, to Cheri and the Worship Committee and “friends” who arranged our chancel so beautifully!!

Our Office Manager, Sandy, will enter Wentworth-Douglass tomorrow for surgery - which will keep her away from work for 3-6 weeks (she says “3″ - the doctor predicts “6″).  Please keep her in prayer - for successful surgery and speedy recovery.

In her absence I’ll be in the office sporadically - and we’ll have volunteers (Deanna G., Judy S., and Judith C.) covering the office on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays - from about 10 AM till 1 PM (or something like that).  The telephone message system will be checked regularly, so please leave messages if no one is here.

Believe it or not, the United Methodist Men will have their monthly meeting this Sunday morning - but at a later time.  We’ll gather at 8:30 AM for our breakfast meeting.  In Joe W’s absence, Mike K will be the chief cook!  All the men of the church are invited!!

And remember that we have just one worship service this Sunday - at 10:30 AM.  Childcare will be provided, but there won’t be any Sunday School offered.  I have modified Wesley’s Covenant Renewal Service for our worship - and we’ll celebrate Communion as well.  I truly hope that lots of folks from our congregation will come together to start the year off together in worship!!

On January 7th, nine days from now, the Worship Committee will come to the church at 9:30 AM, to take down all the Advent and Christmas decorations, and store them for the year.  It would be great to have some extra help with this task?  Please don’t think “Aw, someone else will do it!”  You just might be that “someone else.”  We’d love to have your help.

Let me just mention some events that are coming up:

Friday, January 6th, from 1 till 6 PM — Red Cross Blood Drive — we’d love to have donations for food and goodies to share with the donors!
Sunday, January 8th at Noon - Calendaring meeting - to set the program calendar for 2012 - everyone is welcome - committee chairs and officers are requested to be here
Monday through Wednesday, January 9 - 11; I’ll be away at a Continuing Education event in Bangor, Maine
Wednesday, January 11 at 7 PM - our Education Committee sponsored program entitled “Casseroles aren’t enough.”  Check the Bell-Wether for details
Saturday, January 14th at 8 AM - Leadership Training event for our Committee Chairs and officers
Sunday, January  15th at 7 PM - St. John’s Church hosts the 2012 Dover Area Religious Leaders Association “Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance.”
Sunday, January 22nd is Youth Sunday - with youth leading both services

And just to be mean, let me end the year with the last installment of those “brain cramp” questions:
If the professor on Gilligan’s Island can make a radio out of a coconut, why can’t he fix a hole in a boat?
Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours?  They’re both dogs!
If Wile E. Coyote had enough money to buy all that ACME stuff, why didn’t he just buy dinner?
If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?
If electricity comes from electrons, does morality come from morons?
Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?
Why did you just try singing the two songs above?
Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog’s face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window?

Ponder those awhile.  Hope you’re more aware than ever of God’s blessings for you in the new year!  May you grow in grace every day!  See you in church.

Peace, Mark
