News & Notes 6/28/2012

Greetings St. John’s Church Folks!!

It’s great to be back from vacation, and to be among, and in ministry with, the people of God at St. John’s!!  May Christ continue to be manifest in us, and through us, every day.

You may remember that it was shared in the special issue of “News & Notes” last week that our brother, Joe Casey, died.  His Memorial Service has been set for Saturday, July 14th, at 2 PM, here at St. John’s.  I’m hoping the church will turn out to witness to our faith - to witness to the sense of community that we are - and to be of support to Phyllis and their family.

Come join us for VBS from 5:30 till 7:30 PM on July 9th through the 13th. Your child(ren) can come at 5 PM for a light soup ‘n sandwich supper, if they wish.  And then everyone — parents, grandparents, neighbors, siblings and friends — is invited to come on Friday evening, July 13th, at 6:30 PM for a closing presentation and cook out!! It’s all about Jesus, and all about fun!! See you at VBS!  Register online at http://overboard.cokesburyvbs.com/sundayschool@stjohnsdover.org

Some items needed for VBS crafts and decor:
old CD/DVD discs, bright colored Hawaiian leis, imitation fern leaves, plants and moss, pool noodles, styrofoam cooler, different colored bath scrunchies, different colored loofah sponges, aluminum foil, plastic sea creatures (fish, crabs, lobster, seahorse…), blue cellophane, sheets of styrofoam, blue and gray spray paint. If you have any of these items you would like to donate please put them in the collection box in Hartford Hall. Thank you.

One of the “different” fund raisers we have in store this summer is our Yard Sale - August 4th, from 9 AM till 1 PM.  It’s “different” ’cause we’re being invited to rent a space and sell our own “products.”  Jim Korth is the chair of this event, and he told me that no one has spoken to him yet about reserving a space.  This is a great way to get rid of some of those no-longer-needed items just filling up space in your  home, while making a couple dollars for yourself, and helping the church out at the same time.  Speak to Jim soon.

Pictures for our next Church Directory will be taken on August 13 and 14 as well as September 27-29.  Priority will be given to college students who are home for the August appointments.  Pictures will be taken between 1 and 8pm each of the days.  The whole process may take up to an hour from arrival to picture taking to selection of the picture for the directory and ordering any additional pictures that the family/person may want.  All orders will be back in plenty of time for Christmas gift giving.  One free 8×10 will be given to each person/group photographed.  Help will be needed as a receptionist to check in people for their appointments and to take photos of those who are unable to come to the church for the photograph.  Please contact MaryAnne MacKenzie if you can help in any way.  I’m hoping EVERYONE in the church will be willing to have their picture taken -whether you want to purchase any additional pictures for yourself or not.  Directories help us to get to know one another MUCH easier.  Won’t you plan on taking part?

Lookin’ ahead, I see that we have another opportunity to provide a wonderful meal for our neighbors, at the Dover Friendly Kitchen on Tuesday, July 10th.  I hope you’ll plan ahead - to bake something for dessert, and/or to help out with the supper!!

Our Office Manager, Sandy Dearborn, will be on vacation beginning tomorrow - and will be back in the office on July 9th.  I’ll be in an out of the office during her time away, if you need something.  And I’ll be checking the message machine frequently.

At St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Toronto, they have weekly husbands’ marriage seminars.  At the session last week, the priest asked Giuseppe, who said he was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same woman all these years.  Giuseppe replied to the assembled husbands, ‘Wella, I’va tried to treat her nicea, spenda da money on her, but besta of all is, I tooka her to Italy for the 25th anniversary!’  The priest responded, ‘Giuseppe, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here!  Please tell us what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary?’  Giuseppe proudly replied, “I gonna go pick her up.”

That’s it for today.  Enjoy this beautiful weather - drink lots of water - be sure to check on your neighbors (particularly your elderly neighbors) to make sure they’re okay as the heat rises!!  See you in church.  Peace, Mark
